When running Oracle RMAN backups—especially large ones—DBAs often wonder:
“Is my backup still running? How far has it progressed?”

Good news: Oracle provides a powerful way to monitor RMAN operations in real time using the V$SESSION_LONGOPS view.
This view shows long-running operations, including RMAN backups, and helps you estimate how much time is left.

Why Monitor RMAN Backup Progress?

Monitoring RMAN backups is extremely useful for:

  • Tracking progress of long-running RMAN jobs
  • Identifying slow or stuck backup operations
  • Reporting real-time backup completion percentage
  • Capacity planning and backup window estimation
  • Troubleshooting performance bottlenecks

SQL Query to Monitor RMAN Backup Progress

Run the following query from SQL*Plus or any Oracle client tool to see the current status of your RMAN backup:

SELECT SID, SERIAL#, CONTEXT, SOFAR, TOTALWORK,
       ROUND(SOFAR/TOTALWORK*100, 2) AS "%_COMPLETE"
FROM V$SESSION_LONGOPS
WHERE OPNAME LIKE 'RMAN%'
AND OPNAME NOT LIKE '%aggregate%'
AND    TOTALWORK != 0
AND    SOFAR <> TOTALWORK;

What Each Column Means

ColumnDescription
SID / SERIAL#Identifies the session running the RMAN job
CONTEXTInternal identifier for each backup step
SOFARAmount of work completed
TOTALWORKTotal amount of work expected
%_COMPLETEReal-time backup progress percentage

If %_COMPLETE keeps increasing, your backup is progressing normally.

Example Output

SIDSERIAL#SOFARTOTALWORK% COMPLETE
15492014500010000045.00%

This means the RMAN backup is 45% completed.

Tips for Better Monitoring

  • Run the query multiple times to observe progress changes.
  • Join V$SESSION to get client info if multiple backups run simultaneously.
  • You can also monitor RMAN logs using LIST BACKUP and RMAN REPORT.
  • Always ensure backups run during low workload periods for optimal performance.

Conclusion

Monitoring RMAN backup progress doesn’t have to be difficult.
With a simple SQL query against V$SESSION_LONGOPS, you can instantly check:

✔ Backup percentage
✔ Work completed vs total workload
✔ Which session is performing the backup

This helps you keep control of your Oracle backup strategy and avoid unnecessary downtime.
