Migrating Oracle databases has traditionally been complex, risky, and time-consuming—especially when downtime is not an option. To solve this challenge, Oracle introduced Zero-Downtime Migration (ZDM), a premium yet free automation tool that enables seamless, reliable, and highly available Oracle Database migrations into Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Oracle Database cloud services, including Oracle Database@AWS.

In this guide, we’ll explore what ZDM is, its key capabilities, supported environments, how it works, and the migration methods and technologies it uses under the hood.

What Is Oracle Zero-Downtime Migration (ZDM)?

Oracle Zero-Downtime Migration (ZDM) is an end-to-end Oracle Database migration automation tool designed to move Oracle databases with minimal or zero downtime. With very little manual input, ZDM orchestrates the entire migration lifecycle—from readiness checks to final switchover—significantly reducing operational effort and human error.

One of the biggest advantages of ZDM is that it is free to use for migrating Oracle databases to OCI-based database services, making it an enterprise-grade migration solution accessible to all Oracle customers.

Key Features of Oracle ZDM

ZDM provides a rich set of features that simplify even the most complex database migrations:

  • Free end-to-end Oracle Database migration automation
  • Migrate a single database or an entire fleet in parallel
  • Zero to minimal downtime (typically under 15 minutes)
  • Built on Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA)
  • Supports both online and offline migrations
  • Uses physical and logical migration methods
  • Perform in-flight upgrades and non-CDB to PDB conversion
  • Highly customizable workflows with full execution control
  • Audit, prechecks, failure recovery, pause, resume, and rerun support

ZDM is especially well-suited for large-scale enterprise migrations where consistency, automation, and availability are critical.

Supported Environments and Platforms

ZDM supports a wide range of Oracle database environments:

Source Database Requirements

  • Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 and above
  • Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition
  • Single-instance, RAC One Node, and RAC databases

Supported Operating Systems

  • Linux (physical and logical migration supported)
  • Oracle Solaris (logical only)
  • AIX (logical only)

Supported Source Locations

  • On-premises
  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
  • Third-party cloud platforms

Supported Targets

  • OCI-managed database services
  • Exadata Database Service
  • Autonomous Database
  • Oracle Database@AWS
  • Oracle Database@Azure
  • Oracle Database@Google Cloud

This flexibility makes ZDM a powerful solution for hybrid and multicloud migration strategies.

How Oracle ZDM Works

ZDM follows a structured, automated workflow:

1. ZDM Host Setup

  • Download the ZDM binary from My Oracle Support
  • Install and configure it on the ZDM Service Host
  • Supported OS: Oracle Linux 7/8 or RHEL 8

2. Migration Orchestration

  • Configure and validate SSH connectivity
  • Open required network ports
  • Create dump destinations
  • Grant required database privileges

3. Response File Configuration

  • Define migration workflow parameters
  • Select migration method (physical/logical, online/offline)
  • Enable upgrades or multitenant conversion if required

4. Customization & Control

  • Add pre-run and post-run scripts
  • Execute prechecks and audits
  • Pause, resume, terminate, or rerun migration jobs
  • Resume from failure points without restarting

This orchestration allows DBAs to maintain full control with minimal manual intervention.

ZDM Migration Workflow Overview

At a high level, ZDM follows these phases:

  1. Readiness & Discovery
    • Source and target assessment
    • Dependency and compatibility checks
  2. Pre-Migration Checks
    • Validate versions, privileges, connectivity, and storage
  3. Initial Data Transfer
    • RMAN, Data Pump, or database link based transfer
  4. Ongoing Synchronization
    • Data Guard, GoldenGate, or incremental updates
  5. Switchover
    • Minimal downtime cutover to target database
  6. Evaluation & Completion
    • Post-migration checks
    • Cleanup and validation

Migration Methods and Technologies Used by ZDM

ZDM supports two primary migration methods, each available in online and offline modes.

Physical Migration

  • Copies database OS blocks
  • Offline: Backup and restore using RMAN
  • Online: Create physical standby → sync → switchover
  • Technologies:
    • Oracle RMAN
    • Oracle Data Guard
    • ZDLRA (Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance)

Logical Migration

  • Migrates database objects and data
  • Offline: Export / Import
  • Online: Export → Import → incremental apply
  • Technologies:
    • Oracle Data Pump
    • Oracle GoldenGate
    • Database Links

Choosing the Right Method

  • Mission-critical systems: Logical or physical online
  • Dev / test databases: Physical or logical offline

ZDM intelligently selects the best migration workflow based on your requirements.

Why Use Oracle ZDM?

Oracle Zero-Downtime Migration eliminates the traditional risks of database migration by combining:

  • Automation
  • Proven Oracle migration technologies
  • Maximum availability principles
  • Multicloud readiness

Whether you’re migrating a single Oracle database or hundreds across regions and clouds, ZDM ensures a predictable, auditable, and low-risk migration experience.

Final Thoughts

Oracle Zero-Downtime Migration (ZDM) is a game-changer for Oracle Database migrations. It simplifies complex migrations, minimizes downtime, supports hybrid and multicloud targets, and provides enterprise-grade automation—at no cost.

If you’re planning a migration to OCI, Exadata, Autonomous Database, or Oracle Database@AWS, ZDM should be your first choice.
